DENVER - Jarome Iginla felt a little more youthful on his 37th birthday even as he became the old man of the Colorado Avalanche. Hes energized by the challenge of not only trying to keep up with the likes of speedy forward Nathan MacKinnon, who is half Iginlas age, but also of helping this rising squad take another step in its growth. "I dont want to be arrogant, but I still believe I can be very good," said Iginla, who celebrated his birthday Tuesday by signing a three-year, $16 million deal with Colorado. "And this is a dynamic group. I think they work hard and theyre committed, and theyre just going to keep getting better and better." The Avs are coming off a season in which they tied a franchise record with 52 wins in Patrick Roys first year behind the bench and returned to the post-season for the first time since 2009-10. Among their top priorities in the off-season? Adding some grizzled veterans to the squad. First, the team picked up veteran forward Daniel Briere from Montreal for right wing P.A. Parenteau and a fifth-round pick in next years draft. Then, Colorado acquired defenceman Brad Stuart from the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-rounder in 2017. On Tuesday afternoon, shortly after losing fan favourite Paul Stastny in free agency — he signed a four-year, $28 million deal with division rival St. Louis — the Avs worked out a deal with Iginla. It wasnt a laborious task, especially given the friendship between Iginla and Avalanche Hall of Famer turned executive Joe Sakic. The two have been tight since their days with Team Canada and when Sakic made his pitch, Iginla intently listened. Then again, one of Iginlas kids is named Joe at least in part because of Sakic. "(Sakic) is a winner so it definitely had something to do with this," Iginla said. Iginla has played in 1,310 regular season games with Calgary, Pittsburgh and Boston. He had 30 goals in 78 games for the Bruins last season. "Jaromes track record speaks for itself," Sakic said. "He is one of the top goal scorers of all time, as well as a great leader. His addition will bolster our offence." As for being the elder statesman of the team, Iginla just laughed. "I feel good," said Iginla, whos earned two Olympic gold medals with Canada. "As far as my game dropping off, I dont think it will. ... I dont come here expecting to do less." He joins a team that captured a surprise Central Division crown. The turnaround of the Avalanche led to quite a few post-season awards, too, with Roy taking home coach of the year, MacKinnon being named the top rookie and Ryan OReilly capturing the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for gentlemanly play. Semyon Varlamov also was a finalist for outstanding goaltender, which went to Tuukka Rask of Boston. Sakic was hoping to return the nucleus for another run, but wasnt about to break the bank to make that happen. Sakic said two weeks ago the team had a salary structure in place, setting the financial bar in deals with Varlamov, Matt Duchene and captain Gabriel Landeskog. These days, Sakic is attempting to work out a long-term deal with OReilly, a restricted free agent who led the team with a career-high 28 goals in 2013-14. In the meantime, Sakic orchestrated a deal to add the 34-year-old Stuart in order to bring more tenacity to the Avalanches blue line. He was third on the Sharks in blocked shots (114) and hits (122) last season. Stuart may be called upon to mentor defenceman Nick Holden, who signed a three-year extension that runs through the 2017-18 season. Briere is another scorer who could help offset the loss of Stastny. Iginla likes the additions of Stuart and Briere. "Its kind of neat to join a new team, but also having other guys in the same boat and get to come in together," Iginla said. "Thats pretty cool." One of the enduring images in Avalanche history is Sakic passing the Stanley Cup over to Ray Bourque for him to hoist after their win in 2001. See Landeskog doing the same for Iginla one day? "Thats a hope," Iginla said. "These guys, theyre driven. I think there are lots of good things already happening." ___ AP Hockey Writer Larry Lage contributed. The 34-year-old Laval, Que. native has played six seasons with the Penguins.EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There was a time before Y2K when the New York Giants and Washington Redskins were a constant in the NFC East.If they werent winning the division, they were either a wild-card playoff contender or a team right in the mix until the final week of the season. Not anymore. The Giants (4-9) and Redskins (3-10) have fallen on hard times and Sundays game at MetLife Stadium is meaningless in terms of playoff considerations. Both have been eliminated.New York and Washington have combined for two playoffs appearances since 2009. The Giants went in the 2011 season and won the Super Bowl. The Redskins went the following year when Robert Griffin III was considered one of the NFLs up-and-coming quarterbacks.Again, not anymore.Tom Coughlin and the Giants come into the game after snapping a seven-game losing streak with a 36-7 win over Tennessee. Washington has lost five straight and is coming off a 24-0 loss to the St. Louis Rams. There is definitely a sense of relief getting that win, but we cant keep celebrating at this point, Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Weve got to get ready for the Washington Redskins, weve got to get back to having great practices, getting prepared, and going out there and trying to get another one.New York might have played its best game beating the Redskins 45-14 on Sept. 25. Manning threw four touchdown passes, including three to tight end Larry Donnell. It was the second win in a three-game streak that gave Giants fans hope. It didnt last long.Washington has not done much under first-year coach Jay Gruden, losing five of its first six games. The Redskins have one two-game winning streak. The offence has struggled most of the season and the defence has given up too many big plays. We are just trying to improve our football team as coaches, Gruden said. That is all we can do: coach, motivate and try to get these guys better on a weekly basis. There is a lot to coach and there are a lot of things we need to do better in all phases.Coughlin, Gruden and their players insist no one is quitting. Its more of a pride issue, because you dont want to be part of a team that has a bad season that gives up at the end, especially when you can do something about it, Redskins linebacker Keenan Robinson said. Some things to knoow about the Redskins-Giants matchup:QUARTERBACK STORIES: Manning, who was on the injury report for the first time in years with a back issue, will be starting his 165th consecutive game.dddddddddddd The Redskins have used three quarterbacks this season — Griffin, Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins — and none has distinguished himself. Injuries have made it unclear who will start Sunday, although McCoy is the favourite, if healthy. The good thing is I feel like I looked at all three quarterbacks, Gruden said. The bad thing is, I want one of these quarterbacks to step in and I would love for one of them to take over and get us something to be excited about moving forward.SACK ISSUES: Sacks tend to come in bunches and the Giants are in one of those streaks. They have 15 sacks in the last two weeks in games against Jacksonville and Tennessee.Rookie linebacker Devon Kennard has had four and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul 3 1/2.Washington has allowed 46 sacks this season, second most in the league. The Rams had seven last week in the win over the Redskins, getting McCoy six times.COACHING CORNER: Coughlin and Gruden are both on the hot seat with their teams struggling. The 68-year-old Coughlin has failed to take the Giants to the post-season three straight years, but he has two Super Bowl titles since taking the job in 2004.In taking over a team that went 3-13, Gruden was given a five-year contract in January to replace Mike Shanahan. Some wonder if he will be one and done if the losing does not end.GIANTS YOUNGSTERS: Top pick Odell Beckham Jr. is coming off a career-best 11 receptions for 130 yards. Fourth-round pick Andre Williams had a career-high 131 yards rushing and a TD on 24 carries, and Kennard, the fifth-round pick, had two sacks for the second straight game. He also forced a fumbled that was returned for a touchdown.OUT OF SIGHT: Giants special team coach Tom Quinn cant say enough about Redskins punter Tress Way, who is averaging a league-high 48.1 yards with a 39.7 net.He has one of the highest hang times I have ever recorded, its like 5.53, 5.6 seconds on a 55-yard punt, which is tough to do, Quinn said.___AP Sports Writer Joseph White contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
